University of Florida (UF) professor Jack E. Davis subtracted an entire letter grade from a student’s paper because he used the word “man” instead of a gender-neutral alternative term such as “humankind.”
The student was Martin Poirier, a history major at UF, and his paper was titled, “History of Water.” Davis marked on Poirier’s paper that it was a “thoughtful paper, although the writing mechanics errors are killing you,” referencing that the use of “man” is incorrect terminology.
On top of being penalized by an entire letter grade, Davis forwarded a copy of Poirier’s essay to the entire class, requesting students to “scrutinize” the mechanics and content of his essay, putting Poirier in the “hot seat.” Despite keeping Poirier’s name anonymous on the paper, Davis was confronted by Poirier during the next class period.
Poirier bravely claimed in class that Davis’ objections were politically motivated, to which the professor ranted, “Everything is political,” saying that gender-neutral pronouns were “pre-baked into the original intent of the independent, American nation’s values and founding documents.”
In the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “mankind” and “humankind” have synonymous definitions.
“I have plenty more examples of bias in other courses, many much more severe,” Poirer told The Daily Nerv. Professor Davis has declined requests for comment.
