Progressives threaten Democrat leaders over Trump

Liberal groups have threatened to oppose Democratic Party leaders who might compromise with Trump by supporting more progressive candidates in upcoming elections.

The Associated Press reported Monday that CREDO Action claims it will target Democratic leaders who are willing to work with the new Republican president.

On the organization’s website, CREDO boasts that it has approximately five million activists who “helped win historic victories for peace with Iran, real Net Neutrality, blocking the Keystone XL pipeline, Arctic offshore drilling and coal leasing on federal lands, raising the minimum wage, and blocking Wall Street cronies from political appointments.”

Four days after Trump’s election, CREDO emailed the following to its supporters: “Democratic leaders have been welcoming Trump. That’s not acceptable. Democratic leaders need to stand up and fight. Now.”

Activists are currently organizing to support primary challengers to Democratic lawmakers who “offer anything less than complete resistance to the Republican president.”

Cenk Uygur, who supported Senator Bernie Sanders in the 2016 election and founded Justice Democrats, an organization that is working to “replace every establishment politician in Congress in 2018,” said, “We are not interested in unity. We can’t beat the Republicans unless we have good, honest, uncorrupted candidates.”

We Will Replace You, a progressive political action group started by Sanders supporters, is urging Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to remove Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia from his new role in party leadership. Manchin has exhibited willingness to work with the president and was present when Trump overturned a bill passed during the Obama administration that regulated the cleanup of coal mining debris.

According to Ben Wilker of the liberal website, “At this moment of successive Trump crises, resistance rather than compromise is what the country needs.”

Thirty-three Senate seats will be filled in the 2018 midterm elections, only eight of which are held by Republicans. The Republicans currently have the majority in the Senate, holding 52 seats.
