Putin weighs in on Trump pulling out of Paris agreement

Russian President Vladamir Putin opted not to join other major world leaders in their criticism of Trump after the United States pulled out of the Paris climate accord on Friday.

U.S.-Russian solidarity on climate following Trump’s decision is unsurprising given Russia never signed on to the Paris agreement in the first place. The Associated Press reports that Putin reminded an economic forum on Friday of the substantial leeway the agreement gives signatories to back track on their commitments and said he was open to Trump’s suggestion of a renegotiation of the deal.

Russia, at the very least, has summited a plan to limit its greenhouse gas emissions to no more than 75 percent of 1990 levels by 2030.

Yet while world leaders are vehement over Trump’s decision, the opposite sentiment emanates from the Kremlin, as reflected in Reuters quote of Putin upon hearing the news: “Don’t worry, be happy.”
