Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) confirmed via Twitter Friday that he has asked congressional intelligence committees and the White House for information regarding possible surveillance of himself by then-President Obama and/or the Intelligence community.

“I have formally requested from the WH and the Intel Committees info on whether I was surveilled by Obama admin and or the Intel community!” Paul tweeted.

The request follows Trump’s claim that the Obama administration wiretapped Trump Tower during the 2016 presidential election, an allegation FBI Director James Comey has denied.

Paul’s tweet came after Trump’s allegations of deliberate surveillance and a recent National Security Agency (NSA) report revealing that the NSA fulfilled nearly 2,000 requests to unmask names in 2016.

The NSA report does not indicate that the agency participated in the unmasking of names hoping they would belong to certain people.

“Did the Obama admin go after presidential candidates, members of Congress, journalists, clergy, lawyers, fed judges? Did the Obama admin use warrantless ‘wiretapping’ on other candidates besides @realDonaldTrump?” Paul wrote in two previous tweets, linking them to an article from Circa, a news organization that requested documents regarding unmasked intercepts.

Paul calls it “a big deal” that Trump associates were caught up in the incidental collection during calls with foreign citizens who were themselves under surveillance.

Paul, along with many civil libertarians, contends that, since foreign surveillance does not require a warrant, Americans captured in that surveillance are being observed without a warrant.

According to The Hill, “Foreign, warrantless surveillance is authorized under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which comes up for renewal later this year. Comey has described Section 702 as the ‘crown jewels’ of FBI surveillance tools.”
