Forty people have been arrested on charges related to child sex-trafficking, prostitution, and drugs, thanks to a two-phase, ten-day undercover operation headed by detectives in Lake County, Florida.

The undercover investigation, dubbed Operation Catfish, was “targeting subjects online attempting to meet children for sexual activity, as well as those committing acts related to prostitution,” says a press release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office released on Monday.

The article goes on to state the following:

At least one minor, an unnamed 17-year-old sex-trafficking victim, was recovered from the operation. “Detectives conducted the operation from a vacant home in South Lake County, during which time they posed online as a 14-year-old child. The subjects traveled to the home with the intent to have sex with whom they thought was the child and were taken into custody upon arrival. One subject fled the area but was later identified and charged accordingly,” the sheriff’s office said. Two vehicles were seized and a stolen firearm recovered during the operation.

LAKE SHERIFF’S CYBER CRIMES DETECTIVES ARREST 40 IN UNDERCOVER OPERATION
Detectives assigned to the Lake County sheriff’s Cyber Crimes Unit recently concluded a 10-day, two-phase operation targeting subjects online attempting to meet children for sexual activity, as well as those committing acts related to prostitution. The investigation, dubbed Operation Catfish, resulted in 40 arrests for various sex-related or drug crimes. A 17-year-old victim of human trafficking was also recovered.

Detectives conducted the operation from a vacant home in South Lake County, during which time they posed online as a 14-year-old child. The subjects traveled to the home with the intent to have sex with whom they thought was the child and were taken into custody upon arrival. One subject fled the area but was later identified and charged accordingly.

Detectives also seized two vehicles and recovered a stolen firearm.

This operation would not have been possible without the cooperation and support from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and other member agencies of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
