Freshman Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday blasted “religious fundamentalists,” claiming they are trying to “outlaw sex” they don’t agree with by passing laws banning abortion.

The Bronx and Queens congresswoman made the assertion in a series of  tweets that came hours after Alabama’s governor signed into a law a bill that would ban nearly all abortions in the state.

The article goes on to state the following:

“Abortion bans aren’t just about controlling women’s bodies,” she wrote. “They’re about controlling women’s sexuality. Owning women. From limiting birth control to banning comprehensive sex ed, US religious fundamentalists are working hard to outlaw sex that falls outside their theology.”

In another tweet, she continued that the fight to ban abortion is ultimately about “women’s power.”

“When women are in control of their sexuality, it threatens a core element underpinning right-wing ideology: patriarchy,” she wrote. “It’s a brutal form of oppression to seize control of the 1 essential thing a person should command: their own body.”
