Report: Data shows shocking facts about violent pornography

Google data analyst Seth Stephens-Davidowitz says that porn featuring violence against women is more popular among women, possibly explaining the popularity of the novel “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Stephens-Davidowitz analyzes billions of Google searches daily to make observations about human behavior. He’s had a successful academic career in data mining, getting published in academic journals, the New York Times, and recently writing the book, “Everybody Lies.”

In an interview with Vox, he elaborated on some of his findings.

“Porn featuring violence against women is also extremely popular among women,” said Stephens-Davidowitz. “It is far more popular among women than men.”

There is no cultural indicator sparking the interest.  “The rate at which women watch violent porn is roughly the same in every part of the world. It isn’t correlated with how women are treated,” said Stephens-Davidowitz.

He calls Google data a “digital truth serum.”
