PARIS (AP) – A Paris court on Monday found French former President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of corruption and influence peddling and sentenced him to one year in prison and a two-year suspended sentence.

The 66-year-old politician, who was president from 2007 to 2012, was convicted for having tried to illegally obtain information from a senior magistrate in 2014 about a legal action in which he was involved.

The article goes on to state the following:

The court said Sarkozy will be entitled to request to be detained at home with an electronic bracelet.

The facts presented to the court were “particularly serious” since the former president committed these crimes to help his own personal interest. Sarkozy was a former lawyer so his knowledge about committing illegal misdeeds were “perfectly informed,” said the court.

Political Editor Lewis Goodall tweeted Monday, “NEW: Big news in France. Former President Nicolas Sarkozy has been found guilty of corruption and sentenced to 3 years in prison (2 years suspended). It’s the second time a former president of the fifth republic has been given a sentence.”

Goodall continued, “Reports say Sarkozy will serve at least the first part of his sentence at home wearing an electronic tag. An extraordinary and humiliating end to his political life. When elected he said he wanted to be France’s Thatcher, the Republic’s great reformer. Instead he is in disgrace. Worth remembering one of Sarkozy’s Prime Ministers (and presidential candidate) François Fillon was also found guilty of corruption (on unrelated charges).”
