A recent study has shown that energy drinks can be more harmful to you than caffeine alone, thwarting the former manufacturer’s claim to the contrary. Blood pressure and heart function changes were significantly higher in a group of 18 healthy men and women after having an energy drink compared to another beverage that contained only caffeine.
The group’s blood pressure and heart activity measured by an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) were monitored for 24 hours after consuming the different drinks. Irregularities in the heartbeat were seen with the energy drinks only, with blood pressure being raised four additional points with the energy drink, as well. It also took at least six hours for the blood pressure to return to normal.
Researchers further stated that this should not be a concern for healthy people but ones with certain heart conditions should be careful when it comes to energy drinks.
