Two Kissimmee, Florida, police officers, Matthew Baxter and Sam Howard, were shot in an ambush while investigating suspected drug activity Friday night, with one officer being killed in the shooting, and the other dying the next day.
The shooter, identified as Everett Miller, 45, was arrested several hours later and transported to jail in the handcuffs belonging to one of the officers he shot.
At the time of his arrest, it was noted that Miller is a U.S. Marine veteran.
After his arrest, an investigation of Miller’s Facebook page revealed that, shortly before gunning down the officers, he changed his name to “Malik Mohammad Ali” but left his former name, Glenn Miller, in parenthesis on his page.
According to Heavy.com, a man who had served in the U.S. Marines with Miller, Darren Hightower, said he had spoken to Miller in recent weeks. Hightower confirmed that Miller did, indeed, go by the name Malik Mohammad Ali, a name change he had recently made.
Ali’s Facebook page, which has now been taken down, was reportedly filled with anger over racism in the United States and included many posts about slavery, Charlottesville, and Confederate monuments, as well as derogatory posts about President Donald Trump.
Ali had written in a Facebook post – that accompanied a video of the Charlottesville violence – on Aug. 15: “Confederate Nazis…i will hurt you all. You are the enemy. You can run but you cant hide.”
Hightower told Heavy that Ali served in Afghanistan and worked in military security.
The Inquisitr reported that Ali wrote on Facebook that, despite his name change, he wasn’t a Muslim. He also said he didn’t believe in Jesus.
Frontpage Magazine, who is listed as a “hate group” by Southern Poverty Law Center, has noted that all mainstream media headlines are emphasizing the fact that Ali was a U.S. Marine, but are not reporting that he had changed his name to identify with Islam.

“Why is the ‘Marine’ part so newsworthy? Because it fits the media’s political agenda, which is supportive of Islam and black nationalism. But quite hostile to the military. And so no doubt at some point this will be rolled into some fake study at some point showing that veterans have killed more people than Muslim terrorists. And the media will endlessly play it up,” Frontpage stated.
On Friday evening, Officer Matthew Baxter called for help around 9:30 p.m. regarding three males reportedly suspected of drug activity. Officer Sam Howard responded to his call to assist him. CBS News reported that the officers were checking on the three suspects when a fourth man (Ali/Miller) opened fire on them.
Following the shooting and subsequent manhunt, Ali was found and arrested at approximately 11:30 p.m. at Roscoe’s Bar & Package. He had a 9-mm pistol and a .22-caliber revolver on him when he was arrested, and has been charged with first-degree murder.
