House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., urged Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, R-Wis., to press Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y., to step down from his post after he was arrested by the FBI and charged with insider trading.

“Speaker Ryan must call on Congressman Collins to resign,” Pelosi said in a statement. “No person is above the law, not the President nor his first supporter in Congress.”

Pelosi’s statement came after Collins announced that he was suspending his reelection campaign, but would fulfill the remainder of his term and would “continue to fight the meritless charges brought against me and I look forward to having my good name cleared of any wrongdoing.”

The article goes on to state the following:

“This insufficient and overdue announcement does little to drain the toxic cesspool of self-enrichment, special interest deals and corruption that has proliferated in Washington under GOP control,” Pelosi said.

Collins was slated to go up against Democrat Nate McMurray in November. A GOP official said that Collins will likely be put on a town clerkship ballot for a Sept. 13 primary contest. This would open up the opportunity for county party officials to fill his spot on the ballot.

Washington, D.C. — Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after Republican Congressman Chris Collins of New York moved to suspend his re-election campaign following his arrest on multiple counts of securities fraud:

“Speaker Ryan must call on Congressman Collins to resign.  No person is above the law, not the President nor his first supporter in Congress.

“This insufficient and overdue announcement does little to drain the toxic cesspool of self-enrichment, special interest deals and corruption that has proliferated in Washington under GOP control.

“Over and over, the Republicans’ brazen corruption, cronyism and incompetence has left hard-working families in the cold, as the GOP Congress races to put the profits of special interests and lobbyists before the well-being of the American people.  Families face a future of polluted air, dirty water and soaring prescription drug prices under the GOP’s cynical donor-driven agenda.

“Democrats are fighting to make Washington work For The People:

  • Lower your health care costs and prescription drug prices;
  • Increase your pay through strong economic growth by rebuilding America;
  • Clean up corruption to make Washington work for you.

“We must and can break the grip of special interests’ dark money on our politics.”

  1. Then Nancy Piglosi, Diane Feinstein and Maxine Waters should all do the same. They have all benefited from their ties to the federal government; if not them personally it was their spouses.
