President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago golf resort visits are reportedly costing taxpayers millions of dollars, a Washington Post report revealed Friday, alleging that just one of Trump’s recent visits to the Florida club cost $1 million.
The article states that, in total, Trump’s trips have burned $6.6 million of taxpayer money since January.
Perched on a gorgeous, oceanfront property in Florida, presidential visits to the resort require protection by air and by sea, doubling security expenditures. In comparison, a similar trip to Florida by President Barack Obama in 2013 cost $586,000.
Trump hasn’t been shy in outspending his predecessor, already mounting $21 million in travel expenses just six months into his first term, greater than Obama spent on travel his entire 8-year tenure. White House officials have nonetheless defended Trump’s purported work ethic, saying he works wherever he is situated.
“He is not vacationing when he goes to Mar-a-Lago. The president works nonstop every day of the week, no matter where he is,” a White House spokeswoman said in February.
Trump’s visits are pushing Coast Guard resources to their limits, however, as the domestic security agency reportedly spent $17.8 million on presidential detail between October 2016 and March 2017. The number marks a $2.7 million increase from the year before and a $5.1 million jump from 2015 records.
The burden is a heavy one for the Coast Guard, which has financial instability issues of its own, needing $1.5 billion just to catch up on maintenance of its equipment, according to the report.
