The Migration Policy Institute (MPI) is reporting that nearly 700,000 illegal aliens, given temporary amnesty under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, will lose their status.
“MPI projects that all recipients will have lost status by early March 2020,” MPI’s report states.
Their profile of current DACA recipients found that when the program ends, 915 illegal immigrants will lose their DACA status starting in March 2018. By March 2019, 50,000 a month will lose their status.
DACA offered protections to children brought to the United States illegally by their parents. In an announcement in August, Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded the DACA program, stating it was an open-ended, unconstitutional immigration policy that was vulnerable to lawsuits.
After the announcement, President Donald J. Trump said Congress should enact permanent laws if they want to protect the DACA recipients. While both the president and members of Congress have indicated a desire to allow some recipients to stay in the United States, a permanent legislative fix remains in flux.
According to the MPI report, 793,026 illegal aliens participated in the DACA program. There are still 689,800 people benefiting from DACA. Current DACA permits that expire on March 5 can be renewed, but permits may not be renewed after that.
