REPORT: Papadopoulos lied to FBI to protect Trump’s Russia narrative

ABC News, citing a source “with direct knowledge” of the special council’s Russia investigation, is reporting that former foreign policy advisor George Papadopoulos lied to FBI agents out of loyalty to President Donald J. Trump.

Papadopoulos, who served as an advisor to the Trump campaign, pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents about his contacts with Russian nationals during the 2016 election.

Papadopoulos, who offered to set up a meeting between candidate Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin during the campaign, was downplayed by the White House as being a low-level advisor and a “coffee boy.”

The pushback to claims made by the White House comes in the form of numerous photographs showing Papadopoulos and Trump sitting together in meetings with top members of the campaign team.

According to ABC News, its source claims that Papadopoulos lied to the FBI because he did not want to contradict Trump’s narrative that his campaign had no contact with Russian officials during the election.
