Actress Priscilla Presley, who is best known for being married to Elvis, is the latest celebrity to cut ties with the controversial Church of Scientology.

According to news reports, Presley, 72, has been a member of the religious sect for the past nearly 40 years. Tom Cruise and John Travolta are two of Scientology’s most famous members.

“I’ve had enough. I’m done,” said Presley, who reportedly joined the church just after husband Elvis died in 1977.

“Priscilla reached out to John Travolta after Elvis died in 1977 and that’s how she ended up in the church,” a source told the Daily Mail. “She has been in it ever since and she raised her daughter Lisa Marie in it.”

Lisa Marie left the church in 2014, which likely influenced her mom’s decision.

Founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard in 1955, rumors abound regarding the “church of Scientology”, which is said to “blackmail” members into staying. Some have even accused the secretive church of holding them prisoner, making them do hard labor and forcing them apart from their families.

British filmmaker Louis Theroux, for example, was famously followed by Scientologists when he attempted to make a documentary about the church.

BBC Panorama reporter John Sweeney said that church higher-ups “spied” on him during his investigation.

Cruise has credited Scientology with “saving” him, but Lisa Marie had the opposite reaction, stating, “I was slowly starting to self-destruct. They were taking my soul, my money, my everything.”

The church has always vehemently denied all charges of wrongdoing against it.
