Report: Private email of US intelligence official hacked

ForeignPolicy.com received an email Tuesday morning from a hacker styled “Johnnie Walker”, who claims he hacked the private email server of an unnamed US intelligence official.

“The U.S. State Department officer’s email has been hacked,” the email stated, according to Foreign Policy. Attached was a chain of emails from the personal Gmail account of the official, who specializes in matters related to Russia at the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research.

The unknown hacker said the emails included contacts between the official and officials from other departments, including the CIA.

The report is alarming given the myriad problems the US Government has endured at the expense of Russian hackers the past two years. When contacted by Foreign Policy, the State Department would only say that it is “aware that malicious actors often target email accounts of government and business leaders across the United States.”
