WASHINGTON — Seven progressive groups made up of young activists wrote a letter to Joe Biden, the apparent Democratic presidential nominee, with a set of aggressive demands spanning policy and personnel to earn their support in the general election against President Donald Trump.

The letter, which comes hours after Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., ended his campaign, tells Biden that his pitch to “return to normalcy” won’t earn the trust of younger generations or inspire them to vote, arguing that they were already falling behind economically before Trump took office.

The article goes on to state the following:

“Exclusively anti-Trump messaging won’t be enough to lead any candidate to victory. We need you to champion the bold ideas that have galvanized our generation and given us hope in the political process,” read the letter, signed by the Alliance for Youth Action, Justice Democrats, the March for Our Lives Action Fund, NextGen America, Student Action, the Sunrise Movement and United We Dream Action.

In their letter, the young progressives and Sanders supporters made the following demands of Biden, if he intends to earn their support:

  • “Medicare for All”
  • Canceling all student debt
  • Taxing wealth
  • Green New Deal framework of a fully clean energy economy by 2030.
  • Eliminating the legislative filibuster
  • Adding seats to the Supreme Court.
  • Rejecting Wall Street or other corporate executives for important roles
  • Picking a Homeland Security chief committed to “dismantling ICE and CBP as we know them,”
  • Expand DACA
  • Healthcare for undocumented immigrants
  • Protect people form deportation, close detention camps
  • Gun violence prevention, including an IRA probe of the NRA
  • And much more… CLICK HERE to read their letter.

The Sunrise Movement blasted out part of the letter in a series of Twitter posts:

The tweets read:

Messaging around a “return to normalcy” does not & has not earned the support and trust of voters from our generation. For so many young people, going back to the way things were “before Trump” isn’t a motivating enough reason to cast a ballot in November.

The views of younger Americans are the result of a series of crises that took hold when we came of political age, & flow from bad decisions made by those in power from both major parties.

“Doing better than the generation before us” has never been a foregone conclusion for us.

We grew up with endless war, skyrocketing inequality, crushing student loan debt, mass deportations, police murders of black Americans and mass incarceration, schools which have become killing fields, & knowing that the political leaders of today have wrecked our planet.

We’ve spent our whole lives witnessing political leaders prioritize the voices of wealthy lobbyists and big corporations over our needs. From this hardship, we’ve powered a resurgence of social movements demanding fundamental change. Why would we want a return to normalcy?

We need a vision for the future, not a return to the past. To unite the Democratic Party and defeat Donald Trump in November, @JoeBiden has a lot of work to do.
