Minneapolis plans to hire local social media influencers to help spread the city’s message and try to dispel misinformation during the upcoming trial for Derek Chauvin, the former police officer charged with killing George Floyd last year.

Separately, the Minneapolis City Council voted Friday to support a $1.18 million Joint Information System plan focused on “timely and relevant” communication with the community “during periods of heightened tension” throughout the rest of 2021,” a city spokesperson told The Hill. This includes the trial slated to start March 8.

The article goes on to state the following:

The six influencers, who will have a large local following and be considered “trusted messengers,” will send “city-generated and approved messages.” Under the approved proposal, each of the influencers would be paid $2,000, a city spokesperson said in a statement.

According to the report by CBS Minnesota, the influencers will be chosen from Black, Native American, East African, Hmong and Latinx communities.

A city spokesperson said, “The goal is to increase access to information to communities that do not typically follow mainstream news sources or city communications channels and/or who do not consume information in English. It’s also an opportunity to create more two-way communication between the city and communities.”

UCLA Teacher Lia Haberman tweeted Sunday, “Minneapolis to hire influencers to spread messaging during trial over George Floyd’s death. I am all for increased messaging, especially to communities who don’t follow mainstream news sources or consume information in English but this has a HUGE potential to go horribly wrong.”

Haberman continued, “‘What do you think the message is going to be? It’s going to probably be pro-city. It’s going to be anti-protest.’ Please Minneapolis City Council do not screw this up. There’s a fine line between increased communication and sanctioned propaganda.”

  1. Minnehopeless trying to twist the info again. Why not a white influencer if you wanna be transparent. The city Poobahs are worthless pieces of crap!
Officer Chauvin was protecting the public from a drug crazed lunatic & thief…that would be George Floyd!

  2. Because the citizens are about to find out this officer did exactly as he was trained. In fact, this training is, or it was, right on the website. And this procedure had been performed over 200 times.
And Floyd had 3x the level of fentanyl in his system. He was in the middle of a drug overdose when he died.

  3. The video of Chauvin’s knee on Floyd’s neck was viewed by the entire Nation, and even if justified after Floyd’s behavior and not the eventual cause of death, will be Chauvin’s noose that will hang him with a stiff sentence. If he gets off, expect nationwide riots that will make those following Floyd’s death look like child’s play.

  4. The frightening part of this is that Lia Haberman UCLA (Teacher) thinks that social media is an exclusive domain that cannot be a platform to aid in governing. Probability money well spent.

  5. Kangaroo court ,, Chauvin is a sleaze ball from past record,, but Floyd was crack head and actually died from drug overdose!! But the illegitimate powers that prevail will deny the facts and prosecute Chauvin and find guilty because of civil outrage not because of circumstances,, another sad spot in American justice !!!

  6. This trial is going to burn down Minneapolis. They caved to political pressure instead of having a spine. Now that plan is going to fail miserably. Chauvin is not guilty of murder. Not even close. This trial will be a spectacle of legal incompetence.
