The Democratic senator leading the effort to pass the Biden immigration bill in the Senate said it will be a “Herculean” effort to get the sweeping legislation passed amid significant Republican opposition to the bill, which includes a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants.

“As someone who has been in these battles for nearly two decades, I am under no illusions. I know from my time in the Gang of Eight that passing immigration reform through the Senate particularly is a Herculean task,” Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., said on a virtual briefing introducing the legislation.

The article goes on to state the following:

The Citizenship Act of 2021 would give protected status and an eight-year path to citizenship for illegal immigrants in the country as of Jan. 1. Additionally, it would make farmworkers and recipients of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) immediately eligible for green cards.

The report notes the following provisions are also included in Biden’s plan:

  • Establish refugee processing locations in Central America and increase the number of immigration judges
  • Recapturing unused family and work visas from recent years
  • Clearing visa backlogs
  • Increasing number of annual diversity lottery visas to 80,000 from 55,000

In the Senate, at least 10 Republicans would need to support the bill in order to reach the 60 votes needed to pass it.

Below is a segment from Menendez’s comments as he touted the bill on Thursday.

Menendez made the remarks on Thursday in a virtual conference to the pro-immigrant group, The American Business Immigration Coalition. He was introduced on the conference by former U.S. congressman Luis Gutierrez, an open-borders advocate from Illinois, who now lives in Puerto Rico.

Gutierrez declared on Twitter Thursday, “In 1 day @POTUS ended some of our most absurd Trump era executive orders on immigration: ending the Muslim ban, ending border wall construction, preserved DACA, ending pointless deportations, reversing Trumps plan to exclude undocumented immigrants from the Census count…but we are not done yet… The fight is not over until the 11 million immigrants living in the shadows can finally come out to the light towards pathway to citizenship.”

“Immigrants are the backbone of our economy, and it is our duty to create an immigration system that allows them to join the fabrics of our society. The work is just getting started and I’m excited organize with @SenatorMenendez & the hundreds of organizations across the country. Together, WE WILL pass comprehensive immigration reform,” he added.

  1. Finally a Senior Democrat Senator finally admits they are ” illegal” immigrants. Fine since they are illegally in the USA remove them( all 11 to 35 million) and send to the country of their citizenship. If they want immigrate let them file to legally enter our country. This is what the law says ( and Democrats said during the first amnesty.) If they legally immigrate to America we will welcome then with open arms.

But remember Senator you said you intend to increase legal immigration from 55,000 to 80,000 per year. We agree provided you send the illegals, already here , back to their country of origin.

Seems to me that Democrats made the same promise to President Reagan.

  2. Leave it to a Democrat to make Commiting a crime Socially Acceptable and forcing the Law abiding Citizen to Pay for these Crimes and shoulder the burden placed upon our Economy. In this age of Robotics and Automation we get zero benefits from overpopulation!!!
