The Trump administration is proposing to overhaul rules for protests in front of the White House and at other iconic locations in Washington, D.C., in an effort that opponents say is aimed at shutting down free speech.

The National Park Service’s (NPS) proposal, for which public comments are due by Monday, would close much of the sidewalk north of the White House to protests, limit the ability for groups to have spontaneous protests without permits in that area and on the National Mall and open the door to potentially charging some demonstrating groups fees and costs for their events.

The article goes on to state the following:

The plan was released in August with little fanfare. But civil rights groups have been sounding alarm bells in recent days as the comment period comes to a close.

In making the proposal, the NPS cites its mandate to protect land, saying that it wants to “provide greater clarity to the public about how and where demonstrations and special events may be conducted in a manner that protects and preserves the cultural and historic integrity of these areas.”

  1. It’s about time. Not only are they degrading and disrespecting the historic places in D.C., they are also putting not only our president’s life, but the life of many congressmen & women in jeopardy. How can our secret service protect our president when you have screaming hordes going nuts? If President Trump came down the steps of the Capitol Bldg., any nut job could run up to assault him, whether with his hands or a weapon, before any of the agents had time to think……It’s dangerous. If these groups want to protest, and let’s face it, they have been getting more violent by the day….they can do it outside the perimeter. No one is trying to staunch their “free speech” (which also makes them accountable for their actions)..just trying to keep our government officials and their staff safe from the radicals. Nothing wrong with that.

  2. They protest and destroy the area that they are in by climbing on statues, trampling all over the place, leaving enough trash to fill 3 or more garbage trucks and they are saying that it is an attempt to shut down free speech? This is something that should have been done a heck of a long time ago. Fees and permits should be required to have a protest/rally to cover the damage that they leave behind them.
