President Trump is ordering the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency to deport an estimated 4,000 Somali migrants in the U.S., according to a Breitbart report.
Somalia’s ambassador to the United States, Ahmed Isse Awad, told Voice of America on Saturday that his embassy was recently informed that ICE plans to deport at least 4,000 Somali nationals, with many them not presently being held in immigration detention centers.
“We learned through immigration sources that the total number of the Somalis that are in the books of [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement] to be removed are close to 4,000,” said Awad.
An additional subset of Somalis whose asylum requests have been denied are now being held in detention centers or prisons and will soon be facing deportation.
The ambassador added that just under 300 Somalis are currently set to be deported within two months, though his embassy is still awaiting confirmation on details from U.S. authorities about who will be removed and when it will occur.
Under Obama and Bush administrations, Somali migrants were commonly granted clemency upon arriving in the U.S., but the tides are changing with Trump in the White House and cracking down on immigration policies, as he frequently championed throughout his campaign.
Awad claimed, not surprisingly, that Obama only deported 170 Somalis since after committing crimes or getting asylum requests rejected since November 2015.
Based on the current trajectory, Trump will more than double the number of Somalis migrant deportations while his administration is still in its infancy.
ICE recently arrested 82 people from 26 nations late last month during a five-day operation throughout Washington, D.C. Of those detained, ICE states that 68 had previously been convicted of crimes, says the report.
