A Labor Department report reveals that the president’s Florida resort has requested foreign H-2B visa workers to fill positions at the facility. According to the report released Thursday, Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort requested 70 temporary foreign workers to fill positions as cooks, housekeepers and servers, beginning Oct. 1 and ending May 31, 2018.
Another Trump property, The Trump National Golf Course in Jupiter, Fla., also filed a request for the government to grant visas for temporary foreign workers. These would be hired as cooks during the same time period.
The H-2B visa program was established to allow U.S. employers to hire temporary foreign nationals for non-agricultural work, but employers must first establish that American workers are not willing to fill the positions.
According to the filings, a position as “cook” at both Mar-a-Lago and The Trump National Golf Course pays $13.34 per hour, while a “server” is paid $11.88 per hour. Housekeeping employees earn $10.33 per hour. (Scroll down for more.)
President Trump, who has advocated for U.S. jobs and denounced unfair trade deals that hurt American workers, just launched a messaging campaign Monday. The campaign urges citizens to “buy American and hire American.”
On the same day, the Trump administration expanded the H-2B program for workers in certain industries, granting 15,000 extra temporary visas. According to the administration, there aren’t enough American workers to fill the positions in industries such as tourism.
A recent study, however, found that the opposite is true. The Economic Policy Institute released a report that says there is no need to import additional low-skilled foreign laborers.
Trump, however, has defended the practice in the past, saying it’s very difficult to find workers in Palm Beach during the season, leading them to seek foreign workers.
