The Virginia lawmaker who had vowed to launch impeachment proceedings Monday against Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax over two allegations of sexual assault said he isn’t ready to start that process in the House of Delegates.

“There has been an enormous amount of sincere and thoughtful feedback which has led to additional conversations that need to take place before anything is filed,” Delegate Patrick Hope, a Democrat, wrote on Twitter early Monday morning.

Democratic legislators in Virginia circulated Sunday afternoon a draft resolution to start impeachment proceedings against Mr. Fairfax and held a conference call Sunday evening to discuss the idea.

Hope then released additional tweets and a full statement, confirming that he believes the two accusers, and said Lt. Governor Fairfax “should have already resigned.”

In his statement, Hope said he received “an enormous amount of sincere and thoughtful feedback” after circulating the impeachment draft, “which has led me to the conclusion that additional conversations need to take place before anything is filed.”

“The purpose of the additional time is so that we can find the best process to investigate these crimes with the broadest possible support. The impeachment process is about investigating to find the truth. I am open to discussions on other avenues that would accomplish the same goals,” Hope wrote in his statement.
