Republican governor rejects Trump over climate agreement

Republican Governor Charlie Baker announced Friday that Massachusetts is joining a coalition of states vowing to uphold the global climate change initiative after President Trump decided to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris accord, citing its terms are unfair and predicting major job losses because of the agreement.

The Democratic governors of California, New York, and Washington formed the United States Climate Alliance within hours of  Trump’s announcement on Thursday.

On Friday, Democratic governors of Connecticut and Rhode Island also committed to joining the multi-state climate alliance.

The coalition has not definitively stated its objectives outside of upholding its member states’ commitment to the original Paris agreement.

The Massachusetts governor openly denounced Trump’s decision to withdraw from the international pact and said he was committed to promoting clean energy and reduced carbon emissions in his state.

He issued a statement Friday officially announcing that his state is joining the U.S. Climate Alliance, saying his administration “looks forward to continued, bipartisan collaboration with other states to protect the environment, grow the economy and deliver a brighter future to the next generation.”

“As the Commonwealth reiterates its commitment to exceed the emission reduction targets of the Paris Climate Agreement, today we join the U.S. Climate Alliance to expand on our efforts while partnering with other states to combat climate change,” Baker said in a statement. “After speaking with Governors Cuomo and Scott, our administration looks forward to continued, bipartisan collaboration with other states to protect the environment, grow the economy and deliver a brighter future to the next generation.”
