Republican senator offers support to Muslim opponent

Senator Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) offered support to one of his Democratic challengers Tuesday night after reports emerged that she had been criticized on social media for being Muslim.

“Hang in there Deedra [Abboud] Sorry you have to put up with this. Lots of wonderful people across AZ. You’ll find them,” Flake tweeted.

Abboud, a Phoenix attorney, is running in the Democratic primary in which a candidate will be elected to face Flake in a campaign for his Senate seat in 2018.

In response to a Facebook post by Abboud, one user commented, “Get out stinking Muslim.”

Another user wrote, “BAN ISLAM IN THE USA…WE HATE YOUR FILTHY DEATH CULT.”

A spokeswoman for Abboud said that, in the wake of the hate mail and comments received by the candidate, police are escorting Abboud to events.

Flake endured heartless reactions to a June tweet in which he mourned the loss of his father, with critics showing him no sympathy.

Voters in Arizona have historically elected Republican senators. The last Democrat to win a U.S. Senate seat in Arizona was Dennis DeConcini in 1988.
