Restaurants across the country are now joining the fight in preventing President Trump from deporting illegal aliens, defunding sanctuary cities, and building a border wall.
Roughly 80 restaurants are participating in locations including New York, Minnesota, Massachusetts, California, and Michigan. The restaurants are now requesting sanctuary status to shield illegal workers from being arrested and deported. To do this, the restaurants are attempting to follow the tactics used by churches that are protected with sanctuary status from the government.
Gaining sanctuary status prevents law enforcement from questioning and arresting any illegal immigrants. However, the movement is bogus. Restaurants are private businesses subject to workplace and immigration laws. A sanctuary designation will do nothing to prevent federal agents from arresting any workers in the country illegally.
The restaurants argue they are more vulnerable than other businesses given its heavy reliance on illegal labor. Thus, the restaurants are completing online training courses on how to thwart law enforcement, as well as putting up signs saying they are a sanctuary space.
At Detroit’s Russell Street Deli, which serves up deli sandwiches and hotcakes, customers walking in the front door of the racially-diverse restaurant see a sign that reads: “SANCTUARY RESTAURANT a place at the table for everyone.”
The sanctuary status that the sign claims bears no legal integrity, and it is nothing more than a sign of defiance against the president.
The protest was started by the Restaurants Opportunities Centers United (ROCU). The organization claims that more than 1 million illegal aliens living in the U.S. work in the restaurant industry.
Restaurants joining the protest are receiving backlash from the National Restaurant Association, which represents approximately 500,000 restaurants.
