After 146 years in operation, the Ringling Bros.and Barnum & Bailey Circus will close down ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ in May.

Ringling Bros. is the longest running circus of all time.

The circus made its name for showcasing exotic animals and death-defying acts. However, The Associated Press learned declining ticket sales and higher operating costs pushed the company into closing its doors.

According to Ringling Bros. officials, another reason for the closing is the lack of interest from the public. “The circus is no longer relevant today,” said one official to the AP.

Animal rights groups have also long targeted the circus. In 2014, for example, activists lobbied the U.S. Postal Service to stop selling stamps honoring the circus. After years of protests and legal battles, Ringling Bros removed elephants from its shows last year.
