The anti-Trump activists, #NeverTrump hashtaggers and “Free The Delegates” schemers are all out of luck. Trump cannot be stopped, nor dumped, without going through the 112 Rules Committee members, and they won’t support the idea.
Politico reports that they reached out to members of the rules committee to determine where they stand on the idea of any attempt to take the nomination away from Trump. Based on a review of their public statements and dozens of interviews, Politico says they discovered that at least 72 committee members are completely dedicated to Trump.
Only six members of the committee said they would work against Trump in trying to “free the delegates” if given the opportunity, and two of those said they wouldn’t do it unless there was sufficient support.
“I will be actively working to stop any ill-conceived effort to unbind delegates and will work as diligently as I can — procedurally and politically — to ensure any efforts … are defeated and defeated soundly,” said Mike Stuart, a Rules Committee delegate from West Virginia.
Added Nevada Rules Committee delegate Jordan Ross, “Whatever objections, be they petty or vindictive, that might possibly erase the concept of Republican voters to choose their nominee, I have yet to hear one that justifies stealing the votes of over 10 million voters.”
Rules committee members say it would take a dynamic collapse for them to consider changing party rules to obstruct Trump’s nomination. One Arkansas delegate said, “Perhaps if Trump’s poll numbered dropped by 20 points or more… but that’s not going to happen.”
Kendal Unruh, a Colorado Rules Committee delegate, and leader of the anti-Trump movement “Free The Delegates” had called for a “conscience clause” to be added to the party rules, allowing all delegates to vote for whomever they wanted using a moral objection excuse. Colorado conservatives are now trying to unseat Unruh and all other Colorado delegates who were voted in through a questionable process.
Unruh and her group of anti-Trump activists have been contacting all rules committee members themselves, and sending them each copies of a book about delegates voting their conscience, but so far, none are budging.
Unruh threatened that if she doesn’t make headway with the Rules Committee, “Then it’s a floor fight.”
She’ll be fighting against over 13 million Americans who voted for Trump.
