During his annual E2 summit in Utah over the weekend, former Massachusetts governor and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney offered somewhat positive remarks about President Trump and hinted at another run for office.
According to Utah’s KUER radio, Romney’s annual summit attracted wealthy donors, political elites and business leaders. During the event, Romney claimed that he and Trump are “not as far apart as I feared early on.”
Citing areas where the two agree, Romney mentioned Trump’s appointment of Justice Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, the president’s pro-business economic policies, and Trump’s approach to NATO. Romney was reportedly a candidate for the position of Secretary of State in the Trump administration, but the president ultimately selected Rex Tillerson.
During a Q&A, Romney said it was “encouraging” that he had been considered for the post.
“I didn’t believe for a minute I could tell him what to do on any of those things, but I thought that that kind of openness was very encouraging,” Romney said. “And if he was willing to have me in that position, I would be anxious to serve because I love the country.”
Romney might have his sights set on a different office. Politico reported that, in a closed-door appearance Friday, former Democratic Vice President Joe Biden encouraged Romney to run for a Senate seat.
Romney reportedly smiled at the suggestion as the audience applauded.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has also spoken to Romney about the possibility of succeeding Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) should Hatch choose to retire.
In a speech delivered during Trump’s presidential run, Romney called Trump “a phony, a fraud” before later presenting himself as a candidate for a cabinet position in the Trump administration.
According to Politico, multiple Romney advisers claimed that a run for office remained unlikely, yet it was still under consideration.
