Rory McIlroy, PGA’s current No. 3 ranked golfer and four-time major winner recently played a round of golf with President Donald Trump. McIlroy’s decision to play 18 holes with the golf-loving president forced the 27 year-old to issue a statement on Twitter, given the heated climate on social media surrounding his accepted invitation. You can read his full statement below.
Called a “fascist” and a “bigot”, McIlroy said playing with Trump was not a “political statement”, but “quite simply, a round of golf.”
“Whether you respect the person who holds that position or not,” McIlroy wrote, “you respect the office that he holds.”
The spotlight surrounding McIlroy coincided with a New York Times story involving current PGA players and President Trump. NYT writer Karen Crouse polled 56 golfers if they would accept the same invite extended to McIlroy, and a super-majority of golfers said yes. Of the 56 players questioned by Crouse, 50 said they would play with Trump, while 3 said no and 3 others declined to answer.
