Rory McIlroy Issues Statement After Getting Hammered For Playing Golf With Trump

Rory McIlroy, PGA’s current No. 3 ranked golfer and four-time major winner recently played a round of golf with President Donald Trump. McIlroy’s decision to play 18 holes with the golf-loving president forced the 27 year-old to issue a statement on Twitter, given the heated climate on social media surrounding his accepted invitation. You can read his full statement below.

Called a “fascist” and a “bigot”, McIlroy said playing with Trump was not a “political statement”, but “quite simply, a round of golf.”

“Whether you respect the person who holds that position or not,” McIlroy wrote, “you respect the office that he holds.”

NYT writer Karen Crouse polled 56 golfers if they would accept the same invite extended to McIlroy, and a super-majority of golfers said yes. Of the 56 players questioned by Crouse, 50 said they would play with Trump, while 3 said no and 3 others declined to answer.
