Two vocal anti-Trump celebrities are seemingly at odds over a stunt that put one of them out of work in the United States. Rosie O’Donnell, a frequent detractor of President Donald J. Trump, says Kathy Griffin’s ill-conceived photo shoot “joke” was a “mistake.”

In May, Griffin and photographer Tyler Shields conspired to produce a piece of shock art, which outraged the nation and was extremely upsetting and personal to the Trump family. In the photo, Griffin smugly holds a prop of a bloody head that resembles President Trump.

O’Donnell addressed the photograph while speaking to host Howard Stern on his SiriusXM show on Monday.

“You take what the enemy does to terrorize Americans — cuts off the head of [journalists] Daniel Pearl and James Foley — and when I saw the image, that’s the first thing I thought was, ‘Kathy, that’s wrong,’” O’Donnell said of Griffin’s stunt. “What Kathy did, I think, was a mistake.”

O’Donnell said she urged Griffin to remove the image. “I’m the one — I called her and told her right away, ‘You take it down. You pick up your iPhone, you apologize,’” O’Donnell reported.

Griffin did apologize, although not for the heinous attack on the president, but for how the image was received. In a video posted to Twitter, Griffin said: “I’m just now seeing the reaction of these images. I went way too far. The image is too disturbing, I understand how it offends people. It wasn’t funny. I get it.”

She asked forgiveness and said she would be taking the image down.

Then, in an August interview with Australia’s Seven Network, Griffin rescinded the apology and said she was “no longer sorry,” considering the backlash she received in America, including losing a hosting job with CNN and numerous comic gigs.

O’Donnell said that Griffin is simply a “comic that talks about the Kardashians,” and dismissed her social commentary.

O’Donnell also took a jab at the president, calling him “mentally unstable.” She told Stern that he would not serve his entire term as president, saying, “I know it with every cell in my body.”

In early October, TMZ attacked the president in a hit piece that featured O’Donnell, in which she said President Trump is “the worst human being alive.”
