Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), a constant critic of the Kremlin, was blasted Monday by a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin for his “rude attacks.”

“Thank God, this gentleman is not the one who shapes or implements US foreign policy,” Dmitry Peskov told TASS, the Russian state news service. “Therefore we will naturally avoid exaggerating the significance of these insulting and rude attacks or linking them with bilateral Russian-US relations somehow.”

During an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” McCain claimed to be “speechless” about President Trump’s Oval Office meeting with a Russian delegation that included Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“I know this: Mr. Lavrov is the stooge of a thug and a murderer,” McCain said in a likely reference to Putin. “He had no business in the Oval Office.”

Peskov asserted that McCain has articulated “insults on several occasions before,” but said that the senator’s latest remarks went “over the line of decency and departed from a tone appropriate for a statesman.”

Following the comments, McCain was also derided by Russian state-run media, including the Sputnik website which posted the headline “Twitter on McCain: ‘Butt-Hurt, Russia-Obsessed’ Senator ‘Has Lost His Mind.'”

“I’m always flattered to receive such accolades from our Russian friends!” McCain shot back on Twitter Monday morning.
