Radio listeners in Washington, D.C. will soon be able to tune-in to a new outlet for news, after Sputnik Radio takes over a bluegrass station to begin broadcasting on 105.5 FM.
Sputnik, a pro-Russia news outlet, announced Friday it’s entering the radio market in order to push back against “constant attacks” by the U.S. media, according to Mindia Gavasheli, editor-in-chief of Sputnik’s D.C. bureau.
“We’re glad to finally be able to directly address our listeners in Washington. During the last few months Sputnik Radio has become the target of constant attacks in the US corporate media,” Gavasheli said. “And often the people who wrote or spoke about us didn’t even bother to listen to our broadcasts first.”
According to Gavasheli, Sputnik’s new radio broadcasts will allow people “to hear our broadcasts instead of rumors about them.”
Sputnik, launched in 2014 by Russian state-run news service Rossiya Segodnya, has been accused of being a propaganda tool of the Kremlin. Last month, their former U.S. correspondent Andrew Feinberg left the news outlet, saying they were only interested in spreading pro-Russian propaganda.
Sputnik Radio’s expansion to the D.C. area comes as investigations continue regarding accusations that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election. While U.S. intelligence officials conclude that the Russian government tried to influence the election, the Kremlin has denied any involvement. They blame the media for a growing anti-Russia sentiment in the U.S. and Western Europe.
