School sells bulletproof protection for kids

A Miami school is selling bulletproof panels for backpacks, to be used as a defensive shield against a potential shooting attack, according to CNN.

The Florida Christian School, a private facility that hosts students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, offers the panels, as well as other gear and products, on a website. Alongside order forms for winter garment orders and community service reporting, a “Ballistic Panel Order Form” can be found on a page for parents and students.

At $120 each, the bulletproof panels are “another level of protection in the event of an active shooter,” said George Gulla, the head of the school.

According to Gulla, training has been given to teachers to allow them to guide students as to the proper use of the panels during an active shooting attack.

“The teachers are trained to instruct the students to use their backpacks as a shield to protect themselves,” Gulla said.

Florida Christian School has never faced a shooting incident, but the protective device is being offered as a preemptive attempt at safety, following other deadly mass shootings in the United States, including school shootings.

In September a student at Freeman High School in Washington state opened fire on his classmates in the tiny town of Rockford, population 500. One student was killed and three others were injured.

Most recently, a gunman identified as Devin Kelley carried out a shooting rampage at a church, targeting members attending services at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. The massacre was thwarted by a citizen, who engaged the gunman in an exchange of gunfire.

Kelley killed 26 people and wounded 20 others in what has been described as Texas’ deadliest mass shooting.
