Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump’s first address will be “forgotten in a day or two.”
In an interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer on the “Today Show,” Lauer asked Schumer if he thought there could be any future cooperation between Democrats and Republicans following Trump’s speech.
“I’ll say yes when he comes up with something that really helps working people and says, ‘I want to work with Democrats, here’s my proposal; what’s yours?’”
Schumer then went on to say that the speech was forgettable and has a “shelf life.”
“It’s hard to see any place where the president actually has done something for working people. You know, a speech has a shelf life. People forgot his inaugural speech. He had 40 days. Very difficult time, because he’s not governing like his speeches.”
Although Trump’s speech has received a lot of praise from Republicans and political observers, Schumer was less optimistic about its content.
“He’s given a whole lot of speeches and we’ve seen that the speeches and the reality don’t match,” Schumer said. “This speech will be forgotten in a day or two.”
