At the current moment, the Secretary of State position in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration is “wide open,” according to MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
Mitt Romney is currently at the top of Trump’s list, while Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is “fading” and Former Utah Gov. and U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman (R) and retired Gen. David Petraeus are currently not serious candidates for the role.
On Sunday, Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said Trump has “broadened the search” for a person to fill this top position.
Trump will be meeting with ExxonMobil CEO Rex W. Tillerson on Tuesday, and according to Morning Joe, Trump is “intrigued” with his “vast knowledge of the world.”
Trump has met with many candidates for the position throughout this transition period, and he has faced the most backlash from his supporters for even considering Romney to serve as the nation’s top diplomat. This all stems from Romney’s harsh criticism of Trump throughout the presidential campaign.
