A Michigan doctor and his wife were arrested Friday and charged with conspiring to perform female genital mutilations (FGM) on minors.
Fakhruddin Attar, M.D., 53, and his wife, Farida Attar, 50, both of Livonia, Michigan, are facing the charges following the alleged genital mutilations of minor-aged girls performed in Fakhruddin Attar’s Livonia medical clinic.
The complaint revealed that some of Attar’s victims traveled from other states to undergo the procedure and that FGM was performed on girls who were approximately six to eight years old.
The Attars have a court appearance scheduled Friday afternoon in Detroit.
The couple allegedly conspired with Jumana Nagarwala, M.D., who was arrested in Detroit on April 12, 2017, detained on April 17, 2017, and is awaiting trial. Nagarwala and the Attars are thought to be the first offenders to face charges related to female genital mutilation under 18 U.S. Code § 116.
