An off-duty police officer in Maryland was shot and killed while intervening in a domestic violence dispute on Wednesday, become the second cop to be killed in the United States within a 12-hour period.

The murdered officer was a Medal of Valor recipient.

Fox News reported: Prince George’s Police Department said 14-year veteran Corporal Mujahid A. Ramazziddin was the officer killed in the confrontation. He was off-duty at the time of the incident. He was assigned to the Special Operations Division. NBC Washington reported the officer was a veteran of the Marine Corps and a father of four children. 

“Mujahid stood his ground to defend the life of the individual who had come to him for help,” Chief Hank Stawinski said. 

NBC Washington reported the suspect shot at police from his car before officers were able to stop him. Officers shot and killed the suspect as he attempted to flee in a wooded area. 

The Prince George Police Department told tweeted several statements about the incident:

With broken hearts, we are announcing that one of our officers was shot and killed today. The brave officer was shot while stepping in to protect a woman threatened in a domestic situation. Please keep his family and our department in your prayers.

Responding officers then shot and killed the suspect, the police department stated. The suspect was identified 37 -year-old Glenn Tydell, who had 3 open warrants for assault.
