Sen. Feinstein slams Trump’s call for investigation into Hillary Clinton

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) finds suggestions to investigate suspicious behavior displayed by twice-failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton “deeply disturbing.” In a statement released on Friday, she warned Americans against becoming too comfortable with “politicizing” law enforcement after President Donald J. Trump pointed out Clinton’s many questionable activities, and urged the Justice Department to investigate.

“The president’s repeated calls for the Justice Department and FBI to investigate Hillary Clinton are deeply disturbing. They show his contempt for the rule of law and undermine faith in our justice system,” said Feinstein. “We can’t allow ourselves to become numb to the president of the United States calling on independent law enforcement organizations to investigate his political opponents.”

Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which oversees the Justice Department (DOJ), was reacting to the president’s Friday tweets, in which he called on investigators in the FBI and DOJ to look into allegations of Clinton’s’ potentially corrupt dealings.

Among the allegations the president feels warrant attention are:

  • Reports that Clinton rigged the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination to disadvantage opponent Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)
  • Clinton’s use of a private email server during her tenure as Secretary of State
  • The Obama-era uranium deal with a Russian state-owned energy company that seemed to financially benefit the Clinton’s

Feinstein also chided the president on Wednesday, suggesting that he has an obligation to bring the country together and not sow division after a terrorist foreign national killed 8 people in Manhattan. She found the president’s comments after the attack “deeply troubling” and suggested they were “driven” by commentary on Fox News.
