On Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer announced Democrats will filibuster the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch — claiming the judge will sway the Supreme Court too far away from the Democratic agenda.
In his speech on the Senate floor, Schumer (D-N.Y.) claimed, “After careful deliberation, I have concluded that I cannot support Judge Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court.”
Schumer’s attempt comes as a challenge to Republicans who may be forced to use the “nuclear option” — an option Schumer, himself, voted to trigger four years ago, but now is asking Republicans not to follow in his footsteps.
Instead, Schumer suggested, “The answer isn’t to change the rules, it’s to change the nominee.”
Democrats have been threatening the filibuster since February, causing President Trump to urge Republicans to trigger the nuclear option:
