The son of Tim Kaine, U.S. senator and 2016 vice-presidential running mate of Hillary Clinton, was arrested Mar. 4 on suspicion of second-degree rioting for disrupting a pro-Trump rally.
Linwood Michael Kaine, 24, took part in a counter-protest to the “March 4 Trump” rally in St. Paul, Minnesota, where protesters turned the peaceful rally violent by using chants, whistles, air horns, and a smoke bomb.
Linwood Kaine, who goes by the name Woody, was witnessed lighting fireworks with four other people inside the state’s capitol, a claim that is being investigated, according to Steve Linders, a St. Paul police spokesman.
St. Paul police arrested Kaine and the four others after the group ran from the capitol.
Once Kaine was detained, “he turned around and squared up to fight with the officer,” Linders stated. “The officer was able to place Mr. Kaine under arrest and take him to the Ramsey County jail for booking.”
Minnesota state patrol reported the “March 4 Trump” rally had crowds of about 400 Trump supporters and 50 counter-protesters. Speeches took place for about 30 minutes within the St. Paul Capitol rotunda before a group of protesters disrupted the event.
A 61-year-old woman was reportedly struck in the head with a smoke bomb. Linders said she was not injured, and it was unclear who threw the smoke bomb.
Skirmishes also broke out and someone sprayed a chemical irritant into the crowd. Security guards intervened, causing some counter-demonstrators to leave and the rally resumed.
Six people, including Kaine, were arrested at the rally, then released Mar. 7 with no charges filed. The case is still under review by St. Paul city attorney Samuel Clark for possible misdemeanor charges.

No one involved in the arrest was aware that Woody Kaine is the son of Tim Kaine, who released a statement via a spokesperson to the Pioneer Press.
“We love that our three children have their own views and concerns about current political issues,” his father, Tim Kaine said. “They fully understand the responsibility to express those concerns peacefully.”
Woody Kaine did not return a voicemail message asking him for comment.

As for the “March 4 Trump” rally-goers, they were undeterred. One rally organizer, Elisa Samrento said that although the disruption was upsetting, it didn’t have much impact.
“All we wanted to do was just celebrate our president in our own country,” she said. “We have the freedom to do it and for those young kids to come … and disrupt and hurt people, that’s very disappointing.”
