Arizona senator Jeff Flake faced a crowd of indignant constituents Thursday, as liberal voters dominated the crowd at a town hall meeting in Mesa.
Prior to Flake’s appearance, audience members voiced their support for Obamacare by chanting, “Health care for all,” which Flake, a Republican, has opposed.
Flake was pummeled with questions regarding health care, the proposed border wall, internet privacy, taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood, and the stance he took on the elimination of the Senate filibuster which led to the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch.
Regarding healthcare, Flake said, “I will continue to support, as much as I can, our free-market system of health care.” His answer was nearly drowned out by boos from the audience, which happened frequently during the 2 ½ hour meeting.
“The last thing we need to happen is to have people who have coverage now to have that coverage yanked out from under them,” Flake said.
Despite Mesa being Flake’s hometown, the audience was hostile throughout the meeting, his first in-person event of the year since the new Congress was seated in January.
Flake was repeatedly asked about taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood, to which he responded, “Sorry, we have a disagreement about this.”
“You work for us! You work for us!” audience members chanted, following his answer.
In an interview prior to the event, Flake said, “These are people with genuine concerns and I’m glad they’re here. I’ll do my best to answer their questions.”
Nationwide, Republican legislators have contended with angry voters at town hall meetings, but Flake is particularly vulnerable since he is up for re-election in 2018 and is expected to face challenging races in his Republican primary and the general election.
“This is what democracy looks like. This has been a great evening,” he said in his closing remarks.
“(Expletive) you,” one man yelled back.
