When asked if Mexico might really pay for the border wall, Attorney General Jeff Sessions replied, “We’re going to get it paid for, one way or the other.”
Speaking on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday, Sessions said that while he’s not expecting the Mexican government to “appropriate money” for the wall, there are ways “we can deal with our trade situation to create the revenue to pay for it.”
Sessions also scoffed at the possibility of a government shutdown over funding the border wall.
“I can’t imagine the Democrats would shut down the government over an objection to building a down payment on a wall that can end the lawlessness,” he said. “Our goal is not to reduce it 50, 60, 70 percent but to end illegality … create a lawful system of immigration where people apply to come here, they wait their turn.”
The country needs the border wall, said Sessions, noting that it will “help us complete the promise that the president has made to the American people. That’s what they want…and I believe Congress will eventually deliver.”
