Senator Jeff Sessions was the first big name in Washington DC to get behind Donald Trump. He is now part of Trump’s advisory team and that’s great because there is no politician more in tune with the immigration issue in America.
Sessions came out swinging on Sunday to defend his candidate against a blistering article published this weekend in the New York Times that is entitled, “Crossing the Line: How Donald Trump Behaved with Women in Private. “
The American people don’t expect “purity” from Donald Trump. They just want “somebody strong enough to take on Washington,” GOP Sen. Jeff Sessions said in an interview with ABC News.
The New York Times story on Trump’s interaction with women made Trump appear to be rude and obnoxious to women over the years. Sessions said the article is about, “People digging in to everything he’s done for all these years.”
“But people have not expected purity on his part,” Sessions said. “What they’re concerned about, they’re deeply concerned about is this: somebody strong enough to take on Washington. Will he challenge the establishment? Will he end the illegality in immigration? Will he insist on trade agreements that lift our economy, increase manufacturing? And will he stand up to the elites? ”
Sessions tried to redirect the conversation towards a different light. “He’s appealing to the new group of voters, bringing in voters Republicans haven’t had in eight years, the ones necessary to win an election.”
The Alabama senator was party to the closed-door meeting with Trump by senate leaders last week, and called it “a good, positive meeting. ”
“He talked. They talked,” Sessions said. “Explained concerns they had. He responded appropriately. It was just — not tense. An afterwards, people came around him and talked informally. I was pleased with that.”
“I think he’s already being more careful about some of the things he says,” Sessions added.
