Sex offender charged with raping 11-year-old girl in hospital room

MASSACHUSETTS — A registered sex offender has been charged this week with the rape of an 11-year-old girl in a hospital room, Springfield authorities report.

Fifty-seven-year-old Dave Saffeels was charged Saturday with a multitude of felonies, including child molestation for assaulting both an 11-year-old and 2-year-old girl.

The atrocious crime occurred when the 11-year-old was visiting a woman at Cox South Hospital to see her deliver twins. It is unclear what Saffeels’ relationship with the woman or the girl is, but he was also visiting.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that according to a probable cause statement later released by police, the 11-year-old said she and Saffeels ended up in a hospital room alone together. The girl told police that Saffeels approached her as she was lying on a couch, placed his hand on her groin, took off her shorts, and then raped her.

The statement goes on to say that Saffeels afterward left the room, but came back a short time later and performed oral sex on the girl.

The next morning, Saffeels was allegedly left alone with the girl again. She states that he put on a pink condom and raped her again, later flushing the condom down a toilet.

The girl admits in a statement that she didn’t tell her mother or anyone else about the incident because she was frightened.

Then again, a few weeks later, Saffeels was reportedly alone with the girl in her home as she took a shower when he entered the shower uninvited. She claims he said he would force her to have sex with him if she didn’t comply.

In a separate incident, Saffeels allegedly assaulted a 2-year-old toddler, as well. A second probable cause statement reveals that Saffeels was at the home of a mother and child when the mother was taking a nap. The mother said she awoke to find her daughter sobbing and Saffeels readying to leave, saying he needed to go to school. After he left, the woman noticed her daughter’s diaper was crooked, and later, when her father was trying to give her a bath, the 2-year-old was crying, covering her groin and saying, “Ouch,” and, “No.”

Saffeels was a registered sex offender, prior to these assaults, stemming from an incident in which he molested a 6-year-old in 2002. He has been charged with nine crimes in total, as a result, to include furnishing pornographic material to a minor, three counts of statutory rape, three counts of statutory sodomy and one count of child molestation.

When he was arrested on Friday, the 57-year-old allegedly described the 11-year-old as sexually provocative, often wearing short shorts and sitting with her legs spread.

According to the statement, Saffeels told investigators the victim once suggestively ate a popsicle in front him.

Cox spokeswoman Kaitlyn McConnell said the hospital was not aware of the allegations at the time they occurred.

“We are fully cooperating with the Springfield Police Department and are taking this matter seriously,” McConnell said.

Online records indicate Saffeels is currently being held in the Greene County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
