Sexist cafe charging a ‘man tax’ on male patrons for absurd reasoning

A vegan cafe called The Handsome Her in Australia has come up with a controversial policy. They’re charging men a tax, making their bills higher than women’s bills.

The 18-percent tax is meant to fight the gender pay gap, according to the owner. Reportedly, 18 percent is a reflection of the pay gap in Australia, as released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

As the Melbourne, Australia, cafe began charging the “man tax,” owner Alex O’Brien says men and women alike have shown support.

“There’s been nothing but positivity from everyone, males and females,” she said, reporting that one man donated $50 in a show of support.

“I like that it is making men stop and question their privilege a little bit,” O’Brien boasted.

Apparently, the tax isn’t all about punishing men simply for being men. O’Brien reports that profits from the tax will be donated to a women’s service.

“One of my friends who works for a not-for-profit women’s service was talking about the pay gap and I thought it was a good idea, so we decided that one week every month, we would charge men an 18 percent premium, which we will donate.”

A sign in front of the cafe declares:

“Handsome Her is a space by women, for women.

House Rules:

Rule #1: Women have priority seating.

Rule #2:  Men will be charged an 18% premium to reflect the gender pay gap (2016) which is donated to a woman’s service.

Rule #3: Respect goes both ways.

Reportedly, along with the tax, The Handsome Her gives women priority seating.

While her customers seem supportive, according to O’Brien, the public at large is showing outrage. As Twitter weighs in, the overwhelming consensus is that the tax is an unfair, sexist move.

No word or statement has been given as to how the cafe handles transgender customers, or those who prefer to label themselves as binary or no gender at all.
