On the new Fox Sports 1 show last week, Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe dug deep into the controversy surrounding the NFL and Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand for the national anthem.
Sharpe tried to shed light on why some black Americans are taking Kaepernick’s side. He stated in World War II, many African Americans in the military fought for freedom on foreign soil, then came back to America and didn’t receive the freedoms they fought for.
He asked why are white criminals taken alive, but black criminals are killed, referencing a white man who had already killed two people and was eating a man’s face, but police only tased him to subdue him.
And yet, he said, a guy selling CDs and a guy selling loose-leaf cigarettes were both killed. “That’s what gets us up in arms,” he shouted. “If you say non-compliance is a death sentence, why is a man spared when he’s gnawing a man’s face after he’s killed two people?”
“We see what happened in Colorado, the guy killed 12, and they take him alive. We see what happened in Charleston, when a guy killed 9 parishioners, they not only take him alive, they took him by Burger King because he’s hungry… so you think we’re supposed to be ok with this?”
Sharpe ranted, “When we grieve, don’t tell us what to grieve for or how long to grieve.” He said just because neither he nor his grandmother were slaves, they still have a right to be upset about slavery, because it happened and existed. He said they’ll try a peaceful rally, but “if you won’t listen, we’ll make you listen… there will be a Baltimore or a Ferguson or a Dallas” … because it is real in Black Americans’ minds that they are treated unfairly.
Sharpe said more of black Americans are unemployed, undereducated, lack healthcare and lack equal housing. He acknowledged the black on black crime in epidemic proportions, and said we have to start with us. “If you take away a person’s hope, they will resort to drastic measures by any means necessary to climb up.” He said we have to get people educated, and we have to get people employed.
