Arizona’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio lost the race for a seventh term as Maricopa County Sheriff Tuesday evening, toppled from his 24-year term by Democrat challenger Paul Penzone.
Penzone’s campaign was heavily funded by billionaire George Soros.
Arpaio is well known as “America’s toughest sheriff” due to his firm enforcement of immigration laws, for which he has received strong backlash from pro-immigrant groups.
Recently, he was found to be in contempt of federal court for disobeying a judge’s order to stop enforcing the state’s immigration laws, and is even potentially facing jail time – for enforcing the law.
