Islam is becoming more radical worldwide. There is no better example than in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, where police patrol the streets looking for couples who are deemed to be disobeying Sharia law. (see video at bottom)
Sharia law prohibits flirting outside of marriage, holding hands and drinking alcohol. The law is particularly strict on women. In Banda Aceh, women are publicly reminded–by female officers utilizing loudspeakers–to wear headscarves and avoid tight clothing.
When couples are deemed to be sitting too close to one another, they are warned by officers. If they have to be reprimanded twice, or their first offense is seen as too egregious, the pair will be arrested, taken to a police station and sentenced to brutal public canings.
The caning ceremonies are designed to cause offenders physical pain and public humiliation.
One such offending couple, 22-year-old Kurnia and his girlfriend, were arrested and sentenced to 25 lashes each for the “crime” of going on a date.
According to women’s activist Ratna Sari, the punishments affect women “worst of all” because the offenders are judged to be immoral. During the public caning of Kurnia’s girlfriend, the crowd shouted, “This is the end of you! Next time you will be dead!”
Sari explains, “After a public beating, women often can’t get back on track again. They have to move away. They lose their jobs.”
Kurnia, who had never committed a crime, spent four months in prison for engaging in a forbidden relationship.
“I never want to experience anything like that again,” he said. He plans to visit his girlfriend’s parents soon and discuss marrying their daughter.
During the past year, hundreds of people have been caned in Banda Aceh, where the radicalization of Islam is fomented by funding from conservative Saudi Arabia. But Sharia law is also creeping into certain areas of the United States.
Muslim migrants continue to settle in America and create “no-go zones” in areas such as Dearborn, Mich., where more than 100,000 Muslims–45 percent of the city–have settled into a community governed by Sharia law. According to Israel Video Network, Muslim authorities in the area build as they like, create schools, and write their own curriculum.
Although the Trump administration is attempting to limit the influx of migrants that settle in no-go zones and cities throughout the country, and who refuse to assimilate into American culture, it is facing vehement resistance from liberal politicians who, in areas like Seattle, are working to implement Sharia-friendly policies.
Without the implementation of restrictions on migration and the requirement that all residents of the United States adhere to American law, areas of the country could begin to resemble Banda Aceh.
