(VIDEO)  The small community of Davis Junction, Illinois asked local artist to build a new World War I memorial, and the results are stunning.

It took Cody Janes one year to carve each sculpture out of a seven-ton slab of Italian marble, Fox News reports.  He says he probably hit his thumb a thousand times – but the two six-foot likenesses of military servicemen he created are emotional and life-like, down to every detail, and are meant to represent those who serve the country, past and present.
